Introduction

The adhesive strength testing apparatus is used to test the adhesive strength  of galvanized layers conforming to ASTM A123/A123M and DIN 50978 standards. This  apparatus is suitable for all flat hot-dip galvanized surfaces.

Application

It can be used with all flat hot-galvanized surface areas. Steel pipes can  also be tested, but if the sample is less than 200 mm, a V-bearing must be used  instead of the usual three-point support.

Standard

DIN 50978: Testing of metallic coatings; adherence of hotdip zinc  coatings

ASTM A123/A123M: Standard Specification for Zinc (Hot‑Dip Galvanized)  Coatings on Iron and Steel Product

Test methods

This device is suitable for all flat hot-dip galvanized surfaces. Steel pipes  can also be tested; however, if the specimen is smaller than 200 mm, a V-shaped  bearing must be used instead of the standard three-point support. The special  design of the apparatus allows testing in all positions, including with the head  facing forward.

A marking template is used to indicate the impact points in the test area  according to the applied standard. The device is cocked and adjusted between two  marked points. When triggered, the hammer strikes the specimen, leaving a linear  indentation. This process is repeated over the distance between the marked  points. If the galvanized coating shows no noticeable flaking between impacts,  the adhesion strength is considered good.

If only a rough estimation of adhesion strength is required, the marking  template is not necessary.
