Introduction

The Vertical Flame Test Chamber is designed to measure the vertical flame spread of textiles, fabrics, and resilient filling materials. It is widely used for children’s sleepwear, upholstery, household fabrics, and other materials requiring fire safety assessment. The chamber provides precise, controlled flame exposure, ensuring compliance with international and national flammability standards.

Application:

The vertical burning of textiles is suitable for all types of fabrics and their products. Test method applicable to the burning performance of the bottom edge of the vertical textile specified in GB5455-2014 standard.

Standards

(1) ASTM D6413 – Standard Test Method for Flame Resistance of Textiles (Vertical Test)
(2) CALIF TB117 – California Technical Bulletin 117 for upholstered furniture
(3) DOC-FF 3/71 – US Department of Commerce flammability test
(4) 16 CFR Parts 1615/1616 – US flammability standards for children’s sleepwear
(5) FTMS 191-5903 – US military textile flammability test
(6) CPAI 84 – Sleepwear flammability standard
(7) FAR 25.853 – Federal Aviation Regulation for aircraft materials
(8) GB/T 5455 – China flammability test for textiles
(9) NFPA 701 (small scale) – Flame propagation testing for textiles
(10) CAN/ULC S109 – Small flame test for Canadian standards
(11) UL 214 – Vertical flame resistance of textiles
(12) CA Title 19 – California fire safety standard

Vertical Flammability Test (V and 5V Levels):

The vertical flammability test evaluates a material’s ability to self-extinguish when exposed to flame in a vertical orientation. There are two main classifications:

1. V-level (50W) Classification: In this test, a 50W flame is applied to the bottom of the sample for 10 seconds, and the time it takes for the flame to extinguish is measured. Materials classified as V-0, V-1, or V-2 must meet specific self-extinguishing criteria. V-0 is the highest rating, indicating that the material stops burning within 10 seconds and does not drip flaming particles.

2. 5V-level (500W) Classification: This test is more stringent and applies a 500W flame to the material for 5 seconds. To pass the 5V test, materials must not burn for more than 60 seconds after the flame is removed, and they should not produce flaming droplets.

Classification After-flame Time (s) Dripping Application
V-0 ≤10 No dripping Electrical enclosures, appliances
V-1 ≤30 No dripping Household appliances
V-2 ≤30 Flaming droplets Low-risk electrical components
5V ≤60 No dripping High-risk electrical environments

Conclusion

The Vertical Flame Test Chamber provides accurate, repeatable assessment of vertical flame spread for textiles and upholstered materials. Its design ensures compliance with global standards, protecting manufacturers, consumers, and regulatory compliance requirements.
